Culture shock is the emotional and behavioural reaction while living and working abroad. When you go to a new place, a new country or even a new city, you often enter a culture that is different from the one you left. Sometimes your culture and the new culture are similar. Another time, they can be very different and even contradictory. The process of culture shock can be illustrated by a model known as the “W” curve. It can be put into four stages. Honeymoon: Everything is great, nothing is wrong, you’re having a wonderful time. Shock: There are so many differences in this country that you don’t know how to deal with them. You didn’t expect things to be like that. Negotiation: You learn to deal with the problems which you set before and you try to integrate them with your own beliefs. Acceptance: You are able to live well in the environment with the differences.
Remember, the key to getting over your culture shock is the understanding of new culture. Living in a foreign country will open new doors, introduce you to new ways of thinking. It will give you valuable skills that will serve you in many ways in the future and which will be part of the benefit of your international education.
